National Dialogue: Experts on Lung Cancer Screening

MedpageToday

This article is a collaboration between MedPage Today and:

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued landmark recommendations for use of low-dose CT scans to detect lung cancer. Because implementation of these recommendations would change clinical practice, MedPage Today convened a video discussion among national stake holders.

More than a dozen major medical institutions accepted the MedPage Today invitation and here we present their diverse reactions to the USPSTF recommendations.

Issues discussed include:

  • Ways to reduce positive results
  • Cost of screening, both for individuals and society
  • Understanding risk of excess radiation
  • Screening and smoking cessation
  • Clinical "weight" of the new guidelines.

USPSTF has often been ahead of the curve when issuing guidelines, but in this case there appears to be strong support from a variety of specialties including pulmonology, radiology, epidemiology, oncology, and surgery.
