NEW YORK -- The Everyday Health Group, a division of J2 Global Inc. (NASDAQ: JCOM), announces the appointment of Marty Makary, MD, MPH, as Editor-in-Chief at MedPage Today, a trusted and reliable daily healthcare news source reaching 800,000 healthcare professionals on a daily basis.
Makary is Chief of Islet Transplant Surgery at Johns Hopkins, practicing surgical oncology and gastrointestinal surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and teaching public health policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Makary is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and was named one of America's 20 most influential people in healthcare by HealthLeaders Magazine. His current research focuses on the appropriateness of medical care, drug pricing, and the impact of healthcare costs on low-income populations.
"I am honored to be a part of this influential and fast-growing healthcare media company, which has grown from being a trusted news source for healthcare professionals into a true voice for clinicians in every specialty and setting," said Makary.
Makary has published three notable books, including the New York Times bestseller Unaccountable, which was released in 2012 and proposes that common-sense, physician-led solutions can fix the U.S. healthcare system. Makary's newest book, The Price We Pay, was published to high acclaim in 2019 and tells the stories of healthcare's disruptive innovators and the new movement to restore medicine to its original mission to help people.
"I am very excited about this partnership," said Rachel Warren, SVP of Editorial for MedPage Today. "MedPage will work closely with Marty and other physician leaders to raise awareness about the problems in U.S. healthcare -- from simple inefficiencies to the creation of unnecessary expenses as a result of unchecked greed. Access to care, medical prices, and the anticipated physician shortage will be at the heart of our national conversations for years to come, and with our broad healthcare professional readership, MedPage will play a critical part as a positive influencer, highlighting the work of disruptors like Marty who are making constructive change."
MedPage Today and Makary plan to announce a new editorial board in early 2020 representing a diversity of perspectives.
"This partnership will combine MedPage's comprehensive, trusted journalism with Marty's innovative ideas for how to improve healthcare," said Dan Stone, President of the Everyday Health Group. "We are thrilled to welcome him on board as we work jointly to empower healthcare professionals with trusted content and services to help promote improved health outcomes."
